I'm still plugging away at longfic bingo, even though the comm seems dead, but you guys, longfic takes so long. But I like their prompt list, and I like kinkmeme style prompts, so I made myself a bingo card, and if anyone is up for this game:

You prompt/request according to a bingo box, I write a prompt fic style fic. I'll x-post to tumblr, but anon is on here. Wild card is free-for-prompter, go nuts.

For the excerpt commentary meme. X-posted here because tumblr, man. Tumblr.

OK! So since Melt Your Clocks is a WiP, this might be spoilery. Not in the sense of giving away plot, but talking about characters and what they’re thinking and that kind of thing. I haven’t done a DVD commentary before, so let me know how I do. :P

I will assume you already know this is darkfic. )

For the prompt:

So, post-movie, whenever Loki gets bored with his imprisonment, he can calmly and easily pay a little visit to Clint's mind and Dom the fuck out of him. For Clint, these sessions take the form of very realistic, vivid, dreams/vision type things. Usually while he is asleep, but occasionally Loki will pop up while he is wide awake (it is 'all in Clint's head' so even if others are present while Loki is taunting him, whispering to him, no one else can see him).

The entirety of SHIELD, just about, had looked into Clint's head and determined that Loki was gone. That Natasha's applied blunt force trauma had been enough, and that Clint was safe, and not a security risk, and in the

Either the entirety of SHIELD was wrong, or Clint is losing his mind.

Content: Noncon, D/s, Mental control and games--this is a bad things happen fic. For the rest of the content tags, please check the AO3 fic header and notes.

Incubus!Tony has to feed on Clint out of desperation even though Clint's off limits due to his history with Loki and people taking away his self control.

It's an accident, and mostly an accident of timing and not thinking ahead, which is practically a team specialty, but Tony is sick with himself, and Steve is furious and worried.

Clint, on the other hand, has got other priorities.

I'll complete you yet, longfic_bingo. No idea if the challenge comm is still alive, but this is between me and that grid of boxes now.

I had the weirdest reality show themed dream last, where I was in some kind of cookoff competition that seemed to be a mash-up of Masterchef and ANTM, with all the cooking intensity of Maasterchef, but where everyone on my team was more interested in dramatic in-fighting and standing around attractively while I frantically tried to make our weird edible garden theme display thing work and yelled at everyone about "The cheese things! The cheese thing are going to burn! Somebody put on more cheese things"

And then we lost because of the cheese things being too cheesy. There is no such thing, weirdly out of place Tim Gunn character! Get out of my cooking dream.

And then I woke up furious and with one arm totally asleep and I hadn't even been lying on it.

This is a sequel to catch fumble catch, which I think I must have started writing before longfic bingo, because I didn't use it for this square.

Offset

Steve overthinks the freakout, and if there's activities Clint's against doing, let alone over doing, it's ones that put Steve into a funk.

Fic contains: Rope bondage and negotiation. It might actually be a little light on the D/s element, but squares. I'm filling my squares. \o/

I feel like I need to explain this fic.

So, since I've been talking about using the MCU as a way to pare down comics canon, here's a fic that I abandoned on my hard drive after realizing that the visuals don't work. As in, I doubt Clint's hairstyle in this would work on the actor, but if you were drawing Clint, or imagining some of the comics visuals, it could.

After realizing that, and deciding to just shelve it because I didn't want anyone to think my sense of design or something is that bad (lol), I kind of wrote from the hip and with a so whatever attitude, so this fic is pretty weird.

I'm marking it MCU here anyway, because I don't know what else to, but this is an example of the kind of canon/imagery clash I mean, and that I try to avoid in things that I put on the AO3.

Also, I realized it's long enough to fill one of my longfic bingo squares.

Marriage of Convenience: [Marvel Cinematic Universe] untitled Thor/Clint fic --5,427 words

One year, Earth-time, after taking over Loki's claim on Clint, Thor is back, Clint is different in ways that are odd and disturbing, and Tony is determined to figure out exactly what's going on between him and Thor, because he's not sure he likes what things are looking like.

This fic includes: Captivity, slavefic themes, D/s undertones, suspicions of non-con, suspicions of abuse, hints of dark stuff happening off screen, hints of off-screen D/s, but in the end everything turns out to be be mostly okay. It's not dark!Thor fic. Really not.

Also, no one is actually married. I may or may not be interpreting those prompt squares with increasing looseness.

Because while I wish he hadn't talked so much about which Mouseguard is based on which of his friends, he's got really great process posts, and talks a lot about comic making in general, including tutorials and discussion of techniques. It's really great!

I just thought of it because I went looking for this post of his about the use of square format and how it allows horizontal panels that have more page presence:

http://davidpetersen.blogspot.com/2009/11/square-format-when-mouse-guard-first.html

And look at the little chart of possible panel breakdowns! It's so good! It gives me such a happy feeling!

I just wish I could get those 12x12 pads of bristol here, but they'd probably be hard to scan.

I've been thinking of doing a fancomic for a while, but I don't know if I have the drawing chops or consistency. Also, I, like. Don't want to draw cars and buildings. :P

Someone sent me this picture as a visual aid in telling me all about his Daredevil costuming feelings:

But doesn't the one on the right look like it would be a great adaptation of Clint's purple get up? Though maybe sans the horns.

We're now in an argument of plum/black or navy vs. marooon/gray. Maybe it's a screen thing, or a knowing the real, not in shadow, color thing, but I'm not backing down on plum.

Nothing's loading except youtube, so I'm finally watching the earlier half of due South. I'm on episode four, and wow. It's really different, at least so far. It seems less cracky, and the Ray-Fraser relationship is almost opposite, somehow? Like with RayK, I always felt like Fraser was the one who's got his shit together, and is the stabilizing influence and RayK kind of a mess, but with RayV it feels like Fraser's out of place, a little naive, and RayV is the one who kind of gets the world. Or at least, understands the environment, and seems to be the one who's exasperatedly tolerant of Fraser's weirdness.

It's really interesting. I wish I'd been in this fandom for its meta heyday.

Also, I really like Fraser's brown uniform. I don't think we see it as much in the RayK half of the show.

If Steve is old in the House of M alt world because he was never frozen, does that mean that the serum doesn't actually, as per fanon, slow down his aging? Or is that just specific to that story? One of the things I have trouble with in fandom is determining when someone saying "it's canon" means it's part of the character's core mythology, or a thing that once happened "in canon" that may or may not be used again by other writers.

Also, I guess I'm the only one who likes House of M, but I'm kind of fascinated by that reverse mutant supremacy world. I've kind of accepted that the set up and resolution of some comics arcs are going to be weaker than what happens in the arc, which includes human rebellion underground, and, someone tells me, Hulk as the Prime Minister of Australia.

Which I hope is a true thing. Because yes.

If Steve wasn't old in M, I might be interested in writing Steve/Clint human rebellion House of M fic. Would it make any sense at all to just have Steve be Steve, or is that too obviously self indulgent canon alteration? I haven't read all the tie ins, and if I had, the sprawling nature of comics canon feels way harder to deal with than MCU, where you can simplify down to "6 Avengers, team ambiguously tied to SHIELD, magic and tech themes, go."

Randomly googling around, I found a podcast talking to Mike Mignola about Hellboy in Hell. I don't think I've ever heard Mignola interviewed, but oh man, he's the best.

"Basically, I killed him off because in hell I don't have to draw cars."
"Partly, it's laziness because I only want to draw what I want to draw, but also it's fear of drawing things that are hard to draw."
"That story came about because I had drawn this page and then realized I had no idea what was going on."
"Drawing other people's writing is easy. You just draw a head and leave a lot of room around it for big speech bubbles."

:D If I wasn't a fan already, this would have done it.

Part 1&2, but I'm posting it here now. Also for my long-fic bingo card square, "Someone died/didn't die". That bingo card is years of work, omg.

Sorry for the Repetition
When Tony fails to save Clint from a mission gone bad, there's only one thing to do. Undo time and try again.

My internet is down again, (Well. It's up and down.) but one of the things I got for Christmas is a mobile wifi modem. It's pretty sweet. I'm still on the started package, so my daily data allowance isn't super. I haven't hit it yet so far, so it's not too tiny, but I don't want to risk video or anything data heavy like my tumblr dash.

But I got it working on my laptop now, and it's pretty sweet. Reasonably fast too, for DW, checking my tumblr activity page, and AO3.

I love having a backup! And it's small and cute and way better than the usb modem I had years ago.

This time it was only down for a week! \o/ Who knows how long it will last, though.

Anyway, in the meantime, I read the entirety of Y-The Last Man that I just kept not getting to. opinions and stuff )

In other comics I've been reading, where are the real Avengers during Dark Avengers?

I'm working on a story that's a prequel, and am having trouble coming up with an overarching plot, even though I think the setting and world problems of that part of canon are interesting and unique. I want to design out almost entirely the part of the story that takes place and that the canon actually covers, but it's still giving me what I call "Caprica problems." Which are,

1. The earlier events aren't as dramatic or ultimately important as the ones covered in the canon proper. In the case of the BSG--although I'm not writing BSG--mythos, the First Cylon War and surrounding events aren't as dramatic as the fleet or survivors, and in any case, we know any successes are going to prove empty, because we know it's not really over and the war not really won.

Knowing what comes later drains the sense of stakes.

2. Kind of picks up from part of one--the canon set for earlier events are designed to serve the story canon is actually telling, not their own. So the highs and lows are already set-up to not compete with the drama of the proper story, and the events and world building may not hang together for their own sake. You didn't need a cohesive history, for example, for Admiral Adama. You just needed enough to make Apollo feel overshadowed and tortured by duty, and enough to give the world a sense of history. The bits you see might not have a good arc once you start stringing them together, and might not be easy to build on, but either way you're constrained by the precedent.

3. The story has already been told in asides, flashbacks, character conversations, and via the canon proper--we know how the long game ends. Any important questions have already been answered by virtue of us knowing the outcome of the story that happens later.

You have to come up with new, entirely different questions to ask. Otherwise its just filling in spaces that most of the time were intentional "negative space" (story wise) anyway. That is, "seduced by the dark side" is scary and romantic when that suggestion is all you know. The play-by-play just kills the mystery.

Anyway. All of these are kicking my ass. Plus the canon for the prequel events contradicts itself pretty blatantly in parts, so that's a help, show. It really is.

I've been trying to work on this new project, which means getting my figure drawing back up to snuff, but for the last two nights I've just been goofing on the net and watching the end of The Killing.

Which I'm a bit disappointed by. I think it's really well put together, and everything makes sense, but it just kind of...ends. I was expecting a bigger bang to close the main arc, but no. That's probably the point of it, but I feel dissatisfied somehow.
harcourt: (Default)
I can figure out how to write a story, and I can figure out how to translate a script into storyboards or panel layouts, but I cannot for the fuck of me work out how to write a story to convert into panel layouts.

By which I man, how do you comic script. Are you supposed to see it as text in your head, or as drawn pages?
